First In My Family: Student Access Workshop Supports First-Generation Students
On September 17, 2026, the Epsilon Chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. (LTA) at Rutgers University–New Brunswick hosted “First In My Family,” a workshop designed to support first-generation college students navigating college life. The Division of Access and Community Engagement was invited to present the workshop and open up a supportive space for first-generation college students to share unique experiences, navigate college life, build on-campus community, and discuss adjusting to campus while balancing family expectations. Students from Greek-lettered organizations and others from the Rutgers community also attended the workshop.
The Division's Pre-College Outreach, TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) programs and other Student Access programs contributed content and insights to the workshop. The presentation introduced students to campus history, resources for student success, and services specifically for first-generation students, including cultural centers on campus. Paul Robeson Success Institute mentors in attendance also supported participants in creating a “Rutgers Survival Guide” during the engaging session.
Participants shared positive feedback, describing the workshop as a “really helpful event.” Another participant, expressed their surprise at discovering new information and resources even after attending Rutgers for several years. Others highlighted the welcoming and engaging atmosphere, with one student remarking “I felt excited to go here again!”
The Division of Access and Community Engagement welcomes opportunities to collaborate with other student organizations interested in hosting similar workshops. Organizations can contact the Pre-College Outreach Coordinator at nb.aceprecollege@rutgers.edu to discuss potential events and workshop ideas.
